You leave a family dinner, a work meeting, or even a fun night out and nothing “went wrong” but your body feels wrecked. If you’ve ever needed a day or two to recover from normal social time, I’m unpacking what may actually be happening beneath the surface: your nervous system might be processing other people’s emotional states as if they were your own. That’s not weakness, and it’s not just “being an introvert.”
I connect the dots between mirror neurons (the brain’s empathy wiring) and nervous system co-regulation, the biological way humans attune to each other. For many empaths and highly sensitive people, those systems can be more activated and more permeable, which means anxiety, grief, stress, and unspoken tension can hit your body like it belongs to you. We also draw a clear line between emotional boundaries (what you allow in your space) and energetic boundaries (what you allow into your nervous system), plus how an Akashic Records perspective can frame sensitivity as an intentional gift that needs structure.
You’ll walk away with a simple five-minute reset for after any draining social situation: shake your body, take three slow deep breaths, then ask, “What in this feeling is actually mine?” If you’re ready to stop carrying the room home with you, listen now, share this with a sensitive friend, and subscribe so you don’t miss the next quick tip. Would you leave a review and tell me what social setting drains you the most?

Quick Tip Premise
SPEAKER_00If you're an empath, I want you to think about the last time you left a social situation, whether it's a family event, a work meeting, even a fun night out, and you felt like you needed two or more days to fully recover. Nothing traumatic happened. Nobody was rude to you. Everyone may have had a perfectly pleasant time. And when you came home, you were just wrecked. So if that resonates with you, I need you to stay with me for the next couple minutes because the standard of answering, you're just an introvert or you do too much, completely misses actually what is happening inside of your body. I'm Rachel Garrett. I am the host of the Spiritual Spotlight series. And today is the Spiritual Spotlights quick tip. So let's start with the central piece because I think there that it matters if there's actually science behind what impacts may experience. You've probably heard
Why Social Time Wrecks Empaths
SPEAKER_00of mirror neuron neurons. This is why you wince when someone else subs their toe. Funny enough, whenever I see something painful and this is really silly, I feel a pain in my butt. And I don't know why it's so but it's like it's so weird. So also, like, it's why yawning is contagious. You know, so mirror neurons are the neurological basis for empathy. They let us know what another person is feeling. But here is the thing an impasse, this nervous system appears to be significantly more activated, more permeable. Where most people feel for someone, empath can feel
Mirror Neurons And Emotional Overload
SPEAKER_00as someone. And that distinction can be enormous. Because what that means is that your nervous system is literally running other people's emotional state through your own body. Let that set with you for a second. Your nervous system is literally running other people's emotional states through your body, processing their anxiety, their grief, their stress, their unspoken tension, as if it were yours. Your body doesn't always know the difference between what you're generating and what you're absorbing. Now, couple that with something called nervous system co-regulation. So co-regulation is a biological phenomenon where our nervous systems attuned to each other. It's how a calm parent settles a dysregulated child. It's how good therapy can work. It's beautiful and it is necessary. But if you're an empath in a room full of dysregulated, anxious, stressed people, your nervous system is co-regulating with all of them. It's not selective. You're running their systems through yours. And when you get home, you're depleted. Not because you did anything wrong, but because your body did an enormous amount of invisible work. Again, that's not a character flaw. It's just a neurological reality. Now,
Co-Regulation Drains Your System
SPEAKER_00the usual advice for empaths is around emotional boundaries, learning to say no, not overgiving, protecting your time, and all of those things definitely matter. But they don't fully address this because what I'm describing isn't about emotional overgiving. It's about energetic permeability. And those are different problems. An emotional boundary is about what you allow in your space. An energetic boundary is about what you allow into your nervous system. It's less like a wall and more like a semi-permeable membrane, one that lets in light and love through, but filters out what isn't yours to carry. So building those energetic boundaries is definitely a practice. And I work with this directly in the Akashic sessions because our records
Emotional Versus Energetic Boundaries
SPEAKER_00often can show what exactly is when and why you've developed such an open field and what your soul is actually trying to do with that sensitivity. But here's a practical reset that you can use right now within five minutes of living any draining social situation. Shake your body. Literally shake your body, move your arms, roll your shoulders. This is neurological. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system and it helps discharge what you've picked up. So animals will do this naturally after a threat. We've socialized ourselves out of it. Shake it off, not the song, but actual biological reset. Then breathe. Take in three slopes, breaths, slow breaths as you as deep as you can go. Then ask, what in this feeling is actually mine? So not all of it is, some of it belongs to the room that you left. Some of it belongs to someone else's nervous
A Five-Minute Nervous System Reset
SPEAKER_00system. You don't have to carry it home. So here's what I'll add from the Akashic record lens. The records often show it. The capacity to feel deeply was intentional. But the exhaustion that's a single that the gift hasn't been given in the right container yet. The work isn't to dim their sensitivity, it's to build the structure that holds it. So again, I want you to remember if you go into a situation and you come out of it and you're feeling like energetically you're weighed down, you're exhausted. You know, it's even good for people that are like, you know, doing records ratings, such as myself. Like I have to take a moment to send back the energy that's not mine, take back what is mine, and then I will, I will physically wipe the energy off of my body. Energy follows intention. That's what I'm gonna be seeing about every single thing that I preach about. Energy follows intention. You set that intention that I'm cleansing this energy, that energy is gonna dissipate and goes where it needs to go. So here's the takeaway empats aren't exhausted because they're weak or doing too much. They're exhausted because their nervous systems process other people's emotional energy as if it's their own without a filter. The answer isn't less sensitivity, it's stronger energetic boundaries. So thank you for spending time with me and the spiritual spotlight series quick tip, and I'll see you soon.
